General Information on the Judicial Academy of the Slovak Republic

HISTORY

The Judicial Academy of the Slovak Republic has been in existence since 1 September, 2004. Before this date there was the Slovak Association of Judges who perfectly realized the need of having an independent judicial educational institution. Over the years 1996 to 2003 the Executive Committee of the Association had repeatedly made efforts to promote this idea to the Ministry of Justice of the Slovak Republic. At an international conference in the town of Dunajská Streda in June, 2001 the Minister of Justice showed his willingness to support the idea.

Encouraged by the Minister´s promise the Executive and Legislative Committees of the Association supported by several international institutions like the Council of Europe, European Commission, International Association of Judges, Netherlands Helsinki Committee, ABA CEELI, and the British Know-How Fund, prepared a draft act on the Judicial Academy of the Slovak Republic and submitted it to the Ministry of Justice.

On its meeting on 4  December, 2003 the National Council of the Slovak Republic passed  Act No. 548/2003, Coll.of Laws, on the Judicial Academy of the Slovak Republic thus fulfilling the hopes and expectations of the Slovak Association of Judges to establish an Academy.

The Judicial Academy of the Slovak Republic is an educational institution with nation-wide coverage. It is an independent legal entity, a non-profit budgetary organization under the Ministry of Justice of the Slovak Republic. It manages funds specifically allocated in the state budget for the purpose of education of judges, prosecutors and court officials.

The legal seat and the administration of the Academy is in the municipality of Pezinok, just 30 kilometers away from the Slovak capital, Bratislava. The courses themselves are hosted in a different location in the Slovak countryside, in Omšenie, next to the spa town of Trenčianske Teplice in West Slovakia.
